Wheaton Downs Husson 3-0
NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory on Sunday against Husson University on Keefe Field. The Lyons, who are ranked 13th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), improved to 11-2-1. The Eagles are 4-7-1 on the season.
Junior Yuri Moreira (Marlboro, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon School) moved into a tie for fifth in program history with his 13th goal of the season, which went down as his sixth game-winner of the fall. He also moved alone into fourth at Wheaton with 32 career tallies.
Senior Matt Snider (Topsham, ME/Mount Ararat) and freshman Max Swanson (Lexington, MA/Lexington) also scored for the Lyons, while junior Josh Solomon (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) provided two assists. Chris Smart (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) made five saves improving to 4-0, while junior Miguel Dominguez (Rome, GA/Rome) recorded 11 saves for the Eagles.
After taking only seven shots in the opening half, Wheaton fired off 21 in the second stanza, finishing with a 28-7 advantage for the game. Freshman Federico Kelly (Hingham, MA/Hingham) nearly broke a scoreless deadlock during the 54th minute, but his header ricocheted off the right post.
The Lyons got on the board in the 64th minute, as an initial shot by Solomon was turned away by Dominguez, but Moreira pounced on the rebound for the marker at 63:07. Just 2:14 later, Swanson made it 2-0 after running on to a free kick that was curled far post by Solomon.
Smart kept Husson off the scoreboard with a difficult stop in the 71st minute, as senior Mark Trombley's (Burnham, ME/Maine Central Institute) attempt was heading toward the upper left-hand corner before the keeper dove to knock the ball away with his left hand. Following a free-kick sequence in the 77th minute, Trombley sent a point-blank shot wide left.
With less than 10 minutes to go, Wheaton added to its advantage. Freshman Gabe Reich (Brookline, MA/Beaver Country Day School) possessed along the Husson endline before touching out to sophomore Matt Solomon (Avon, CT/Avon Old Farms), whose pass was knocked into the lower left of the net by a cutting Snider.
The Eagles return to action on October 6 with an away game at Bowden at 4:00 PM.
